Interns in this role will be assigned to projects based on their skills, department needs, and current organizational goals.

Responsibilities vary by specific assignment within the department but may include:


  • Support in Strategic Partnership Development and Relationship Cultivation:
  • Assist in developing strategies to establish new partnerships with high schools and universities, aligning our mission with their community service and leadership programs.
  • Support efforts to build relationships with local groups, businesses, and individuals to create a strong base for civic engagement.
  • Chapter and Program Development Support:
  • Help set up and maintain chapters at high schools and integrate civic engagement opportunities into university programs.
  • Support the development of systems for community engagement and success.
  • Curriculum and Civic Training Assistance:
  • Aid in designing and updating a comprehensive training curriculum focused on public safety, leadership skills, and effective civic engagement.
  • Assist in developing educational modules and leadership opportunities tailored to various settings.
  • Event Planning and Management Assistance:
  • Support in organizing and managing events, overseeing logistics from recruitment to execution.
  • Assist with campus events and large-scale community events like 5Ks and safety workshops.
  • Volunteer Support and Engagement Assistance:
  • Provide support and preparation to ensure participants are ready for their roles in civic activities.
  • Help foster rewarding civic engagement experiences through strategic planning and organization.
  • Safety, Compliance, and Performance Monitoring Support:
  • Assist in overseeing the safety and compliance of participants during events.
  • Support the continuous assessment and refinement of the effectiveness of civic programs.
  • Communication, Outreach, and Engagement Assistance:
  • Help establish frameworks for engaging participants and coordinate with local entities to promote diverse civic opportunities.
  • Facilitate communication between participants, event organizers, and leadership to integrate feedback into program improvements.
  • Recognition and Community Involvement Support:
  • Ensure consistent communication and recognition of contributions at all levels.
  • Support engagement with the broader community to promote understanding and support for civic activities.
  • Department-Wide A.I. Integration:
  • Utilize advanced tools like Benevity and Galaxy Digital to manage and match participants with opportunities effectively, learning to optimize these resources under guidance.

  • Encouraged majors/areas of study: Political Science, Sociology, Law, Psychology, International Relations, Public Health, Environmental Studies, Anthropology, Philosophy, Education, Criminology, Business Administration, Cultural Studies, Communications, Urban Studies/Planning, MIS, AI and Machine Learning, Information Technology.
  • Duration: 7-12+ flexible hours/week alongside a busy academic schedule; positions semester-long, year-long, or more—varies with individual student goals, abilities, and performance; weekly responsibilities prioritize quality of project experience rather than quantity of hours logged.
  • Objective: To advance students' leadership and professional expertise in managing civic engagement, intersecting real-world career functions with artificial intelligence (AI) competencies. Participants will refine their skills in strategic partnership development, event planning, and engagement, preparing them for roles in civic leadership, campaign management, and leadership roles in any professional environment.
